About Me

Kevin Spears

Kevin Spears... engineering manager focused on data platforms, living in the Pacific Northwest.

What I do

I'm a Data Platform Engineering manager working at the intersection of DevOps and data engineering. My days involve a lot of AWS, Terraform, and Python. Building and leading teams that keep data infrastructure running smoothly. I've been in IT for over 20 years, starting from desktop support and working my way through server administration, software development, and into engineering leadership.

Why this blog

It's really easy to solve a problem and move on to the next one without documenting what you learned. This blog is my way of fixing that. I write things down so I remember what I've done, and I put it out here in case it helps someone else working through the same thing.

Topics tend to be cloud, homelab, running, and whatever else I'm tinkering with.

The homelab

Three 2013 Mac Pros running Proxmox, hosting a Kubernetes cluster managed with Ansible and ArgoCD. It runs everything from my own Git server to DNS filtering to media services. The whole thing is infrastructure-as-code because that's how it should be... even at home.

Outside the terminal

I like to run and hike and I am currently training for a half marathon. Living in the Pacific Northwest means there's no shortage of great trails, and I try to get out a few times a week.

I'm also into music, I play guitar and run sound at my church. This is a nice change of pace from staring at terminal prompts.
